Catholics believe that through active participation in the liturgy and through the reception of Holy Communion at Mass, they are filled with the real presence of Christ. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion participate in the distribution of this most precious Body and Blood. They are an important part of the Communion Rite, trained lay ministers who serve their brothers and sisters in the assembly. They have, or desire to have, a special devotion to Christ in the Eucharist.
“In the gathering, in the breaking of the bread, in the eating and the drinking, the faithful are joined together as members of Christ’s mystical Body, sharing the one life of the Spirit.” (NDRHC, no. 5)
